After we said goodbye to Snowdoll, Holly became depressed. She has never been an especially frisky dog, but there was a change in her demeanor we could not ignore.
I have long followed several rescue pages on Facebook, always looking at the huskies, even when I have no intention of adopting another. Seeing Holly’s sadness, I would occasionally send Rob a picture of any female huskies I saw.
He took one look at Yuki and we drove 2 hours the next day to see how she and Holly would get along. I took video of their first meeting, which you can see here, Yuki following Holly around the yard of the facility.
When we adopted her, Yuki was very stinky. Now, we’ve had huskies for a long time and never did we have a stinky one. Was it because of her long, silky fur? We didn’t know. We only knew she needed a bath and ASAP!
Good news! She is no longer a stinky dog. Her coat is smooth because we brush her frequently. In fact, we use three different tools—a brush for her body, a wide-tooth comb for her floofy white furry tail and butt, and a dematting comb for the fur behind her ears.
She does not like being groomed, but she tolerates it better now that she has settled in. And boy, did she settle in quickly.
We call her The Fluffy Terrorist because she still cannot be trusted around food. If she can reach it, she will eat it. She even jumps up on her hind legs to reach the kitchen counter, something none of our previous huskies would dare do!
I lost count ages ago of how many socks, leggings, underwear, pillows, pillowcases, duvets, duvet covers, etc. she has eaten a hole into. No towel is safe around Yuki, especially the kitchen towels.
She is also a sweetheart. When the sun comes up, she jumps up into the bed with my spouse, who is usually still asleep, and lies down to look out the window. Because she is so agile, when she jumps up onto the bed, it is very easy to sleep right through it, even if you are a light sleeper, which my spouse definitely is not. (This is a good thing because one of snores and it’s good that the other can sleep through the snoring.)
The best thing about Yuki is she has taught Holly how to play. Holly’s even lost the weight she gained when she was grieving Snowdoll. Our neighbors have two huskies around the same ages as ours—an older boy and a younger girl. Yuki runs rings around all three dogs, often still going after they have a shady spot to lie down and cool off.
Yuki brought so much joy into our lives. You know how they say that you don’t rescue a dog; the dog rescues you? This is very true for us with Yuki. She needed a home. We needed her. We love our floofy girl!
